Should Non-Professional Beauty Influencers Be Cancelled?

In late June, I stumbled upon a post on Instagram by @glamzilla that has since been deleted. She wrote about how so called "beauty bloggers" have nothing to be proud of since they are basically just salesmen and don't actually have an education in makeup. She talked about how non-professionals are taking over the community, sharing non-professional opinions, when it should be filled with actual professionals who know what they're talking about. Since I'm a semi-professional ranter by now, I thought I'd give you my two cents on this topic.

Yes, I do believe it's a shame that people who don't actually have an education in makeup have the loudest voices in this community and the most loyal fan bases. Yes, I think that a lot of so called "beauty bloggers" should be more open about the fact that they have only tried the products on their own bodies and their opinions are just that; their opinions. That being said, I do believe they deserve their space in the community. Sure, they might not be professional makeup artists, but they don't claim to be either. They are entertainers.

I agree that if I hired a person to do my wedding makeup I'd go for a professional who knows what they're doing and not a person who shows up with their own makeup stash and apologizes for not being able to math the foundation to my skin. BUT when I'm done working for the day and just want to wind down in front of the TV, I want to watch someone who entertains me. I honestly don't care if they have a MUA education or not even if they are dipping their brushes into various pans of colourful pressed powders. If they are good at what their job is - creating entertainment - I'm watching.

I can't vouch for every beauty youtuber, because I only watch a tiny little fraction, but the ones I do don't claim to know the things they don't. Blaming beauty bloggers for doing their job (blogging about beauty) seems very petty and unfair. If there is a market there will be people working in it. Stop blaming someone else for succeeding in what you believe to be "your business". No one is stealing your job. No one will hand you a job just because you have a degree. You have to work for it and unless you apply for the job, it won't be yours. What most irks me wit this is that we have MUAs talking this shit. MUAs if any profession should know that it is an incredibly competitive business and if you want the job you not only need talent, you also have to know how to market yourself. It's the same thing with the beauty blogger business. You need the basic knowledge of makeup, but the real product is you and the content you create, not your education.

If you think there's a problem with how beauty bloggers don't disclose which products they're paid to promote I can get behind you. I do believe that's a problem and because a lot of consumers don't realize it's advertising, it's a problem. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be the issue @glamzilla had.

Every MUA complaining about beauty bloggers just sound petty because someone else got the job they wanted. Instead of telling beauty bloggers they have nothing to be proud of (which isn't true, they've created a brand and built a successful business) they should pick up the fight against undisclosed paid sponsorships.

Those were my two cents. What are your thoughts and opinions?

Meh. I do believe there is an issue with the increase in beauty "gurus" and bloggers vs actual MUAs. I say this because for the longest time, I didn't know the difference between the two until recently. I think it needs to be clarified that these gurus are not makeup professionals especially for content related to makeup techniques, etc (if that makes sense). Everything else tends to be more fair game. Also side not, I would not purchase from a brand that collabs with beauty influencers because more times than not, the quality just isn't there. Additionally, I do agree that influencers do play a role in the entertainment aspect of beauty, but that doesn't MUAs are not able to do the same.
